As most of
my readers know, I am not only a lover of food, but also a fanatic of
extremely spicy food. In my “Bigus versus the Wing” article that
appeared in the June 2009 edition of G-Vegas Magazine, I tackled the
famous Buffalo Wild Wings “Blazing' Challenge.” I emerged victorious
from this challenge and was rewarded with an immortalizing picture on
the Greenville BW3’s wall and a t-shirt.
When East Coast Wings & Grill opened in Greenville earlier this year, I
began hearing tales of a wing challenge that would defeat even the most
experienced “chile-head.” Not being one to refuse a challenge, I set out
to take this new challenge. Most of my readers are unaware of my
affinity towards the United States National Men’s Soccer team, but I am
an avid fan and a member of the team’s supporters club known as “The
American Outlaws.” Earlier this summer, I, with my Outlaw brethren,
visited East Coast Wings & Grill to view, what was to become a famous
tournament for our National team, USA vs. Spain in the Confederations
Cup. It was decided, that for every goal that the United States scored,
I was to take the “ECW Insanity Challenge.” To give my readers some
insight on the challenge, it boils down not nothing short of agonizing
pain. The challenge is to eat ONLY one wing covered in the “ECW Insanity
Sauce.” This, if my pallete is correct, is a combination of some of the
world’s hottest chile peppers including Jalapeno, Red Savinia Habenero,
Serrano Pepper, Thai Chiles, and possibly pure Capsacian extract.
Although I am very accustom to handle the spiciest of foods, I have to
concede that this challenge has given me pause each and every time I
have attempted it. I will highlight the most drastic instance. The
United States was ten minutes from beating the number one team in the
world (Spain), in the Confederations Cup with a score of 2-0. Per my
agreement with my fellow US Soccer fans, I was to eat one of these evil
things for every US goal. After my first wing of this particular day,
the insanity wing barely brought more than a couple of tears to my eyes,
and the crowd on hand applauded my ability to withstand such pain.
Almost an hour later, I became victim of the sure evil that is the
“Insanity Wing.” I spent the final few moments of one of the greatest
moments in US Soccer history in the bathroom fighting the repercussions
of the “victory” wings that I had indulged in. Needless to say, I was in
massive pain. Though I did not fall victim to any serious reactions
other than a cold sweat and slight panic, the fact that this one wing
took a heat “veteran” such as myself to a point of absolute misery, is
quite an accomplishment for any cook with the slightest bit of
malcontent is nothing short of impressive.
The challenge, for those as silly as I, is only one wing priced at
$1.89. As expected, you must sign a wavier, which absolves the
restaurant from any wrong doing to your digestive system. Your reward,
my fellow wing warriors, is a picture on the ECW Wall of Flame, and the
honor of buying a survival t-shirt ($10). Though I encourage any diner
to visit East Coast Wings, I must convey a warning to anyone that
insists on this challenge. I, at this point have taken the challenge
close to ten times, and every time I idiotically attempt it, threatens
my well being. If you insist on following in my footsteps in this
exercise of masochism, be warned. This challenge has quickly become
famous for sending the most adept and egotist to the bathroom in agony.
Also, if you haven’t been deterred from the challenge, immediately after
your crying subsides, please ask Brian (the bartender laughing at you)
for a ginger-ale or a glass of milk. Though your pride may be hurt, you
will be better served by such a decision in the long run. Besides the
Insanity Wing, ECW offers a diverse menu of American fare including an
impressive 75 favors of wings that will satisfy any craving you may
have. East Coast Wings & Grill is located at 744 Southwest Greenville
Blvd in the Greenville Grande Shopping Center. More information can be
