Laura Sutton is a local
jewelry designer working with metal to create beautiful and
creative piece that dazzle the eye. She’s been turning
heads with her gorgeous pieces since 1995. Sutton’s jewelry
is inspired by nature and her own enthusiasm for designing
and creating. Her artwork explores the relationship of
jewelry to the body. Sutton said she, “works primarily with
organic forms that compliment the female anatomy by
placement, balance and position.”
Laura Sutton received her
Bachelor of Fine Arts n Art Education: Metals and her
Master’s in Metal Design from East Carolina University.
While finishing her Master’s degree, she was a teaching
assistant instructor of Record Metal Design Survey and
Advanced Jewelry Design. With a desire to continue
teaching, Sutton was an adjunct professor in Metal Design
and Color and Design for one year at ECU.
Currently, Sutton is
teaching Art at North Pitt High School and she also teaches
Jewelry Design at Pitt Community College. While teaching
and designing at the same time can be challenging, Sutton
uses her own motivation for design to inspire and challenge
her students. “As an artist working extensively in various
metal techniques and enameling explorations, I have
developed a desire and passion for my media and a desire to
teach these passions,” Sutton said.
Sutton has been exhibiting
her work since 1999 and has attended many conferences and
workshops that helped her gain insight and perfect her
craft. This summer, she taught a class in Enamel
Concentration at Peter’s Valley Craft Center in Layton, New
Jersey. Her latest work was on display at the “Rock the
Bus” exhibition of Pitt County Schools Art Teacher’s work.
This was held from June 2 until July 8 at Emerge Art
Gallery. Emerge has been showcasing Sutton’s designs for
the past few years and is a perfect location to take in many
other local artists’ work.
When asked about her
stunning designs, Sutton said, “The objects I create provoke
and seduce the viewer, with emphasis on the duality created
by the sensual qualities of the piece itself and the
seduction created by the wearer.” If you like any of the
